The link below is to a great interactive chart available through the New York Times. It asks you to fill in a couple of numbers (e.g., current rent, target home price) and shows a 30 year graph that points out when and if there is a break even and eventual advantage over time of your choice. Make sure to use the slide bars to adjust the annual home appreciation off of 1% to at least the state average of 6%.
